TrustLayer LMS

Why now

The May 2026 Instructure/Canvas ransomware attack exposed millions of K-12 students' data, and reviews show zero direct communication to users for weeks. FERPA and state-level student privacy laws are tightening, making proactive incident transparency a compliance requirement rather than a nice-to-have.

Problem

K-12 and higher ed institutions using dominant LMS platforms like Canvas have no independent, real-time visibility into the security posture or incident status of their SaaS providers, leaving students and admins flying blind during breaches.

Audience

District IT administrators, university CISOs, and school technology directors who are contractually locked into platforms like Canvas but need independent oversight.

Concept

A lightweight monitoring and communication layer that sits alongside any LMS, aggregating third-party security advisories, breach disclosures, and uptime signals into a single dashboard for school IT teams. It provides automated parent/student alert templates when incidents occur, and a vendor accountability scorecard updated in near real-time. Think of it as a 'security weather service' for edtech vendors.

[1/5] Ruined my life

Canvas is really bad, u literally got hacked, and this is so unproductive and hard to use. Google classroom is better than yours. Google classroom is free, why would I spend money on something that doesn’t help me in the slightest? Please fix your app, thanks.

[1/5] :(

I used this app for 5 years, and it was perfect! But all of a sudden, I open ClassLink, and there is no canvas? I ask my teacher, and she said it got hacked. I don’t blame y’all, but try to have better security.

[1/5] CANVAS HAS BEEN HACKED, UNINSTALL IMMEDIATELY!

Canvas has recently been hacked, they are asking Instructure for a ransom and currently canvas has been converted into a malware that will activate on your device at the end of the day of May 12th, uninstall before than unless you want to get your files leaked.

[1/5] Absolute joke

Instructure gets hacked and leaves my private data in the hands of scammers? Absolute joke. I cannot wait for the day I can delete this app and never use it again. DO NOT USE CANVAS IF YOU HAVE OTHER OPTIONS!!!

[3/5] Needs improvement

The functionality is nice, but changing the to-do list made it look and function poorly. After the cybersecurity attack it took weeks until my specific school got at least some stuff back up and running. Zero direct communication to users STILL having issues after weeks.
